Written by the Puerto Vallarta Airport Transfers operations team — we drive these routes every day.

Every downtown Puerto Vallarta hotel books under one transfer zone: Zona Hotelera & Old Town. Whether your address is on the Malecon, in El Centro, or on the streets south across the Rio Cuale, that single zone sets your price — from $52 USD per vehicle, all-inclusive, for the drive from PVR airport.

Which booking zone is downtown Puerto Vallarta?

Our booking flow prices a transfer by zone, not by hotel name, and the zones are drawn as geographic areas rather than as neighborhood labels. That trips up downtown arrivals more than any other part of Puerto Vallarta, because "downtown" is the one place where the tourist vocabulary and our zone list do not use the same words. The zone that covers the city core is called Zona Hotelera & Old Town, and it is a single area stretching from the southern edge of the Marina district, along the waterfront past the Malecon, through El Centro, and across the Rio Cuale into the streets on the south side. If your hotel is anywhere in that stretch, that is the zone you select, and $52 USD per vehicle is where the private transfer starts.

The practical consequence: you do not need to work out which neighborhood name your hotel markets itself under. You need your street address. Pick the zone that contains it, and the price is settled. The three zones below are the ones downtown-bound travelers most often have to choose between, with the starting per-vehicle price we publish for each.

The three zones a downtown-bound traveler chooses between
Booking zoneWhat it coversPrivate transfer from
Marina VallartaThe marina district and the hotel towers immediately north of the city$50 USD/vehicle
Zona Hotelera & Old TownThe city core: the Malecon, El Centro, and the streets south across the Rio Cuale$52 USD/vehicle
Conchas ChinasThe hillside neighborhood immediately south of the city core$58 USD/vehicle

Two dollars separate the marina from the city core, and six separate the city core from the hillside immediately south of it. Getting the zone exactly right matters less for your wallet than it does for your driver: the zone is what tells us which side of the city your drop-off is on, and downtown drop-offs are the ones where an approximate address costs real time on cobblestone one-way streets.

Downtown neighborhood names, and which zone each one is

Hotel listings, booking sites, and rental descriptions use at least half a dozen different names for what is geographically the same stretch of Puerto Vallarta. All of the names below sit inside the Zona Hotelera & Old Town booking zone, so all of them price identically:

  • El Centro — the historic center around the main square and the parish church.
  • The Malecon — the oceanfront promenade along the city core.
  • Zona Romantica — the area immediately south of the Rio Cuale.
  • Old Town — the same area as Zona Romantica, under its English-language name.
  • Emiliano Zapata — the formal colonia name for the neighborhood south of the river.
  • Gringo Gulch — the hillside streets above the river on the north side.
  • 5 de Diciembre — the colonia just north of El Centro, uphill from the Malecon.
  • Los Muertos — the beach and pier at the south end of the city core.

The Rio Cuale is the line locals use to split "El Centro" from "Zona Romantica," and if you are reading guidebooks you will see the two treated as separate districts. For transfer pricing they are not separate: the booking zone crosses the river and covers both banks. That is why a listing that says "El Centro" and a listing that says "Old Town" produce the same fare from PVR.

What a downtown transfer costs by vehicle

The $52 starting price is the smallest vehicle we run on the route. From there the Zona Hotelera & Old Town zone has a fixed price ladder — every rate is per vehicle and all-inclusive, not per passenger, so the number in the right-hand column is what the whole party pays for the one-way drive. Read the vehicle class before you read the price: the Standard carries the same number of passengers as the entry vehicle and buys you class and luggage room rather than seats, so the first genuine step up in party size is the Suburban SUV.

PVR to downtown Puerto Vallarta, one way, per vehicle
Vehicle classOne-way price
Smallest vehicleFrom $52 USD
Standard$79 USD
Suburban SUV or private van$120 USD
Sprinter (large groups)$189 USD

Because the rates are flat per vehicle, the cost per traveler falls as the party moves up into the vehicles that carry more people. A couple in the smallest vehicle pays $26 each. Six travelers in a Suburban SUV pay $20 each, and a Sprinter with a group of fourteen works out to $13.50 a head. The exact price for your date, party size, and vehicle selection is confirmed at checkout before you pay anything.

Groups heading downtown: one Sprinter beats two smaller vehicles

This is worth doing the arithmetic on, because splitting a group across several vehicles is the intuitive move and it is the more expensive one on this route. Two Suburbans or two private vans to a downtown hotel is $240. Three Standards is $237. One Sprinter, which is the largest vehicle we run on the route, is $189 — cheaper than either of those combinations, in one vehicle, with one drop-off at your hotel door instead of a convoy arriving at staggered times on narrow downtown streets. If your group is large enough to be considering two vehicles at all, price the Sprinter first.

Downtown is also where a single larger vehicle pays off logistically rather than just financially. The streets in the city core are narrow, many are cobblestone, and a good number are one-way, so a hotel entrance that comfortably takes one vehicle at a time will not take three at once. For weddings, family reunions, and corporate groups with a fixed arrival window, the dedicated group transfers page linked below covers multi-vehicle coordination in more detail.

Downtown versus the resort strip north of the city

A lot of travelers booking a "Puerto Vallarta" hotel are not actually staying in Puerto Vallarta proper, and the distinction changes both the zone and the price. PVR airport sits north of the city core, so the all-inclusive resort strip — Marina Vallarta first, then Nuevo Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit beyond it — is on the airport side, while downtown is a drive past the airport and into the city. Marina Vallarta is 8 to 12 km from the terminal and starts at $50; the city core is 12 to 18 km and starts at $52; Nuevo Vallarta, on the far side of the airport heading north, is 12 to 18 km and starts at $58.

If your booking confirmation names a large all-inclusive brand and a beach, check the address before assuming downtown: most of those properties are in Marina Vallarta or north of the Rio Ameca in Nayarit, not in the city core. If it names a street, a colonia, or a boutique property with fewer than fifty rooms, downtown is the likely answer.

  • Have your full street address and hotel name ready when you book — the zone is geographic, and downtown addresses are the ones where precision saves the most time.
  • Book the vehicle class for your luggage, not just your headcount; the city core has the least room for a second trip if bags do not fit.
  • For a group of more than six, price the Sprinter against two smaller vehicles before splitting the party.
  • If your hotel sits on a pedestrian-only or stepped street in the core, note it at booking so the drop-off point is agreed in advance rather than improvised at the curb.
